Concord, New Hampshire – The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Emergency Services and Communications announces it has partnered with PulsePoint, a 501(c)(3) public non-profit foundation building applications that help public safety agencies inform and engage their citizens, to improve and update the State of New Hampshire's AED registry.

An automated external defibrillator (AED), which delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart, can save a person's life by reviving them from sudden cardiac arrest. An AED can be deployed by anyone and, combined with CPR, can keep a heart attack victim alive until treatment arrives.

In 2002, New Hampshire statutes established an AED registry and further required the registration of all AEDs in the state. One of the stated purposes of the Registry is to identify fixed location AEDs based on associated telephone numbers for inclusion in the Enhanced 911 system's database. However, since nearly 80% of all calls to 911 now come from mobile phones, instead of landlines, callers now need to be directed to an AED associated with their location.

PulsePoint enables registered AEDs to be displayed on a map visible to telecommunicators taking 911 calls. Additionally, PulsePoint's data integrates with ProQA, a medical software solution that guides telecommunicators by providing medical instructions. ProQA can query PulsePoint for nearby AEDs and adjust prompts to the call taker accordingly. As a result, call takes can have the ability to give a 911 caller directions to an AED if there is one nearby.

Anyone deploying an AED in New Hampshire is required by law to register it with the Division of Emergency Services and Communications. AEDs can also now be registered through PulsePoint at http://aed.new, or by downloading the PulsePoint AED app. After an individual or business registers an AED, the Division of Emergency Communications team verifies the registration before updating maps and data that 911 call takers use.

To date, over 3,000 AEDs in the state have been verified. If you have a new AED, be sure to register it: the registry is only as good as the information in it.
